Filling in the Gaps in New York

The New York Giants still continue to make some moves in free agency, but injuries to key position players and the San Francisco 49ers signing two key pieces of the Giants offence leaves some gaps to be filled.  The Super Bowl champs still have the most important players that contributed to the Super Bowl run, but they will need to fill a few positions for support and depth.

The Giants will miss tight end Jack Ballard, since he mostly likely will be out the whole 2012 season after having micro-fracture knee surgery.  No one will forget when Ballard tore his ACL during the Super Bowl game against the Patriots and then tried to get back in the game by attempting to run full speed and cut on the sideline.  He definitely showed he had heart.  Travis Beckum also tore his ACL during the Super Bowl game so the Giants were left with Bear Pascoe who is mostly used for blocking.  The Giants then signed Martellus Bennett in the offseason to a one-year deal from the Dallas Cowboys.  Even though Bennett didn’t have much playing time in Dallas, hopefully he will start to play to his full potential in New York.  The draft will be the Giants next option to find another tight end.

Mario Manningham tested the market and found more money with the 49ers.  It came to know ones surprise that the Giants couldn’t afford to keep Manningham.  He had a great moment in the Super Bowl with the unforgettable sideline catch but he wasn’t a consistent player that the Giants could always count on.  Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz have been the wide receivers with the most consistent potent offense. The Giants have the option of developing their own talent with a few wide receivers already on their roster or seek another option in the upcoming draft.

Brandon Jacobs also left for the west coast to play for the 49ers.  Jacobs was unwilling to take a pay cut and the Giants were unwilling to pay for a running back with decreasing production.  He will be missed for his emotion and energy on and off the field and his contributions to two Super Bowl rings.  It seems like the Giants will look to the draft to find another running back to complement Ahmad Bradshaw.

Looking forward to the April 26th draft and who the Giants will choose to complete this team.
