Enter the Commish! Start the clock! The time has finally come! Ladies, you will be enduring a great deal if you are asked to watch the NFL Draft coverage this year, but have no fear Her Game Life is here to walk you through the basics.
Rounds: The NFL Draft consists of 7 rounds. The most important are the first and second rounds (also the most costly to the teams.)
Drafting Order: Teams are given a position in the drafting order in reverse of their record from the previous season so the team with the worst record gets the first selection of the draft. Any teams that entered the playoffs are then ranked in the order from which they were eliminated from the playoffs. If teams have the same record, their position is determined by strength of their previous seasons schedule, division tiebreaker games and conference tiebreaker games. The very last option is having a coin flip at the NFL Combine to decide between teams with the same record.
|Non-playoff teams||1 to 20|
|Eliminated in Wild Card round||21 to 24|
|Eliminated in Divisional Round||25 to 28|
|Eliminated in Conference Championships||29 and 30|
|Super Bowl losing team||31|
|Super Bowl champion||32|
Teams: Each team has the opportunity to draft an eligible college player when it is their turn.
Time Clock: Every team has 10 minutes to either draft an eligible player or trade their draft pick to another team.
Pick Trades: Draft picks are also included in many different trades. Therefore a team may have multiple or no draft selections in a given round.
Compensatory Picks: There are 32 compensatory picks in the NFL Draft. If a team has lost a larger number or more talented compensatory free agents than they signed in the season prior, they are awarded a compensatory pick. If a team loses a player of great value they may also be awarded a compensatory pick. These picks are awarded at the NFL annual meeting and are placed (draft round wise) based on a formula that includes a player’s salary, playing time and postseason with his new team. They cannot be traded.
Supplemental Compensatory Picks: Any remaining compensatory picks that were not awarded will be given out to teams in order of where they would fall if there was an eigth round of the NFL Draft.
