Sue tells us how an Aussie became a member of WhoDat Nation.
Hi my name is Sue De Tert and I’m a New Orleans Saints fan living in Australia. I was born and raised here but like most Aussies I’m a little sport mad. I am a long time supporter of our own national pastime of Australian Rules Football (AFL) and have supported the Richmond Tigers since I can remember, which at 46yrs old is quite a while! I am a single parent of two adult children who both love sport.
I began watching the NFL here in Australia in 2010 via pay TV and have not looked back since. The main NFL season runs in what for the most part is the AFL off season, which means I am blessed with football all year round. At the start I had no affiliation with any particular team but noticed that there was a team who sported my favourite colours, that being the New Orleans Saints in yellow and black. For me it was a no brainer who I was going to follow. The interest grew and as such I hopped online to research the Saints. Thanks to the internet and twitter information is readily available to fans right across the world, and I do know of other NFL fans here in Australia who are Aussies.
I joined twitter to originally keep in touch with friends and family who live abroad and in the process made some great friends who have similar interests to me, namely other Saints fans of the #whodatnation. They are an amazing and informative group of people from various walks of life and I just love this diversity of nationalities and cultures. One thing they have in common is the true devotion they share for this amazing group of athletes. Furthermore twitter offered the chance to interact with players themselves which I found was amazing! Three in particular have so much patience with their fans and never fail to respond or keep in touch with them. The three are #13 Joe Morgan, #93 Jnr Galette and #6 Thomas Morstead and for that I am grateful. I think twitter more than anything allows a fan to keep up to date with what’s happening and gives an international fan the ability to do so. Our media here will only report main events that occur within the NFL but with the internet and twitter I feel part of the fan base community rather than a sports mad Aussie living on the other side of the world.
The only other thing I can say is #WHODAT and love our boys in black and gold. 2012 is going to be a huge year for the Saints regardless of the scandal.
Many thanks, Sue
