Williams (L) and Smith (R) were teammates in the same class at Maryland and were reunited in their rookie season on the Ravens' roster.
At Ray Rice Day in Towson, MD on May 12, fellow Her Game Life Ravens correspondent Crystal and I got a chance to chat briefly with WRs LaQuan Williams and Torrey Smith as they talked about their upcoming second season in the NFL and life in the off-season.
HGL: What’s your favorite part of the off-season?
TS: Just giving back and getting involved in the community more. During the season, there’s not much time. Now many of the guys have a lot of different charity events. I hosted a basketball game and LaQuan’s event is coming up, and of course Ray [Rice] has a few around here. You just see a lot of guys giving back and it’s fun for us.
HGL: How do you feel mentally and physically going into the next season?
LW: The game has slowed down a lot for us. We had a chance in the off-season to really study the game. Physically we’ll be in top shape.
HGL: You both just completed your rookie seasons. What’s the best piece of advice you have for the Ravens’ rookie class that’s joining you on the field?
LW: Focus on the playbook. Study the playbook.
TS: Even though we’re only a year apart, their whole rookie experience is going to be a lot better than ours since they won’t have a lock out to deal with. My advice is don’t fall into the hype of being in the NFL because at the end of the day it’s still football and still the same game we’ve all played for years. Don’t’ listen to the outside sources. Focus on what you gotta do.”
HGL: With the new players coming in and changes in personnel within the team, what kinds of activities does the team partake in off the field to develop chemistry?
LW: We like to play corn hole in the locker room. It’s very competitive and we play it a lot.
HGL: Outside of football, what else do you like to do for fun?
TS: I like video games…movies. I like fishing a lot back home in Virginia. I like to chill; I’m pretty boring in that way.
It was fun seeing these guys running drills with the kids, but we’re most excited to see them back on the field in full pads.
