Happy Independence Day! Seriously, a day of declaring independence at least for Philadelphia Eagles owners Christina and Jeffrey Lurie. The couple announced on Wednesday that after 20 years of marriage they have decided to go their separate ways. Divorce isn’t a good thing no matter how you slice it, but for Philadelphia Eagles fans this divorce could jeopardize EVERYTHING!
Are the team owners very hands-on from a player perspective? Not so much, but that doesn’t mean the divorce won’t be a distraction. I think the world has seen the debacle between the Dodgers and the divorcing of their team owners, the McCourts, as a cautionary tale and, quite frankly, one that I absolutely do not want to see play out in Philadelphia. Both sides were involved from a business perspective with the team. Christina was very interested with the philanthropic side of the business, while Jeffrey worked closely with former team President Joe Banner.
At this time the divorce is amicable, at least that’s what they are saying, and the news was shared with members of the organization via email. “We share the same goals for the Eagles that we have always had. We want a world championship team, of course, and we want to carry on the dedicated community service that is so much a part of this company’s heart and soul,” the couple explained.
Fingers, toes, arms, legs, eyes and everything else crossed that this situation doesn’t get ugly.
