A blow to the Panthers WR corps was dealt today. WR David Gettis was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list this week. This means that he’s not ready to pass a physical and perform during training camp.
Last year, David Gettis tore his left ACL during training camp and was placed on IR immediately. Gettis was a viable candidate for the #2 WR position for the Panthers this year. In 2010, with murky QB waters, Gettis caught 37 passes for 508 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Luckily for us, with Gettis on the PUP list also comes the trade for Louis Murphy for a conditional pick (sources say the pick is a 7th-rounder). Murphy, a former Oakland Raider, had 75 passes for 1,130 yards and 6 touchdowns in his first two seasons with the Raiders. He suffered a groin injury last season, but should be good to go for the Panthers this year. (You can follow Louis Murphy on Twitter at @murph918).
At this point the WRs of the Carolina Panthers are up in the air. We are certain of one thing, and that’s Steve Smith, but where the rest will fit in is a story for training camp and the regular season.
