… And football is back!
The San Diego Chargers gathered yesterday at the Chargers Park where they hosted over 5,000 fans at their very first public training camp. In attendance were our incoming rookies from the draft: Melvin Ingram, Kendall Reyes and Brandon Taylor. Along with our rookies were some familiar faces including Cam Thomas, Antonio Garay and Shaun Phillips.
They opened their training camp with individual practice drills before moving onto team blitz, special teams and the standard 7×7 and 9×9 drills.
The biggest question of this season is how the newcomers are going to fill the shoes of the players that have departed? Rookie Brandon Taylor also wearing the #28 as former Strong Safety Gregory (Now with the New England Patriots) will play alongside veteran Eric Weddle finished strong during practice.
The players who weren’t fully suited up but could be seen on the sidelines throwing the ball were former Denver Broncos player Eddie Royal and Willie Brown. The players that were missing were Atari Bigby and Charlie Whitehurst who suffered from a knee injury. The only player completely MIA was Kyle Boller who apparently retired after he signed his contract.
Another surprise this year is the upgrade on food. Instead of your standard hot dog stand with potato chips, training camp has introduced us to not one but TWO different food trucks. I still suggest bringing in your own goodies but the variety they’ve provided us is great! I started waiting in line around 11:30 a.m. so I recommend something to keep you entertained for a couple of hours, sunscreen, a chair and water to keep you hydrated.
Overall the first training camp practice was extremely productive! Along with me and the rest of the fans, we’re pumped and ready for the season to start!
