I was fortunate enough to get tickets to the Bills/Dolphins game this year and it made me think of the long rivalry between the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills. Although in more recent years a Bills fan who is asked which team they’d most like to beat would probably reply the Patriots, there is nothing like watching a Miami/Buffalo game to get the blood boiling again.
As a kid growing up in the nineties, “squish the fish!” was the mantra every Sunday we would play Miami. That would inevitably be followed by the requisite talk how dolphins are not fish but mammals. Seriously, every time there was a Miami/Bills game, we fans got to “learn” that dolphins are mammals. The rivalry between Dan Marino and Jim Kelly, Don Shula and Marv Levy was so palpable that you got the sense that these guys truly disliked each other even off the field (or so we’d like to think).
Although a little bit of that hatred between the Bills and the Dolphins has faded, as both teams struggled to win in recent years, I couldn’t help but get excited when I learned that I would be going to the Miami game in primetime this year and how much I would love it if we crushed them.
In Buffalo there’s probably no bigger sign of a traitor then a Buffalo native being a Miami Dolphins fan. It’s like a Red Sox fan growing up in the Bronx ….you wonder how did it happen and what went wrong? Unfortunately we have one of those in our group of friends, so I’ll be sure to stay far away from him, since he’s crazy enough to wear Dolphins gear into the Ralph, and Bills fans don’t take too kindly to that.
November 15th, I’ll be the girl away from that Dolphins loving friend in the stands, hoping to watch those fish (mammals) go down!
