5 Things You Need to Know to Make You Smarter Than Your Boyfriend

Calling all HGL fans! This weekly column is your one stop shop to get in the know about everything going on around the league. From injury updates, and holdouts, to news off the field, your football knowledge will surely grow week after week. Don’t believe me? Put your knowledge to the test with friends and that certain someone. You’ll surely be able to hold your own and them some in the conversation.

1. HOLDIN’ OUT

Every season some NFL players decide to push back on their organization and ask them to, “Show them the money!” The players do this because they believe that their talent is worth more than what the organization is valuing them at. Whatever the truth may be, these players take it upon themselves to not participate in any team organized events until they see some more green. Sound about right Chris Johnson? Truthfully, these holdouts do more harm to the fans than anybody else. What would a Sunday be like not seeing your favorite player suit up when they are perfectly capable to? Vincent Jackson fans know this all too well. Find out below if one of your favorite players is holding out.

Maurice Jones-Drew Courtesy: PDA.PHOTO

RB Maurice Jones-Drew-Jacksonville Jaguars- The final hold out that probably means the most. The holdout continues with the Jags and their number one player. If Jones-Drew misses a regular season game, he will start to lose the same thing he is vying for…money. Head Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey told NFL.com that, ”There’s no exercises and nothing you can do to simulate an NFL practice and an NFL game. We’ll just see where he is when he’s back both mentally and physically,” Mularkey said. “I think it would be a disservice to put him in if he was not fully prepared. It would be a health risk to do that.” To me, that sounds like Mularkey doesn’t think MJD will be ready when and if he comes back. The hold out has gotten so bad that there are talks of MJD finding himself on a new team. The running back’s agent  Adisa Bakari told The Associated Press earlier this week that the running back is upset with Jags owner Shad Khan’s recent public comments about his client’s holdout. “Maurice wants to play for an organization that wants him and for an owner who respects him and values what he brings to a team- on the field, in the locker room and in the community,” Bakari said. The Jags owner said that he will not go into any ”what ifs” on whether or not he would trade Jones-Drew, and added, “We would love for him to be back.” That sentiment is quite different form what Khan said before. Last week Khan said MJD’s absence, “doesn’t even more the needle’ in terms of stress. Regardless of the holdout, Jones-Drew is under contract for the next two years and will more than likely suit up for the Jags. The question is, when? Once this hold out is over, a whole new slew of problems could arise, including Jones-Drew playing time if someone emerges (Ahem, Rashad Jennings) from camp looking good. Keep an eye out on this one.

2. BREAKING DOWN THE REFEREE LOCKOUT

NFL referees are continuing to protest against the league’s proposed changes for the 2012-2013 season. The strike has been going on since June 3rd, and talks between the NFL and the National Football League Referees Association (NFLRA) have come to a stand still. It has become murky as to what both sides are disagreeing about; here’s a quick breakdown on what each side is fighting for.
The league would like to add three additional crews to the existing veteran referees. League spokesman Greg Aiello explains that the addition would, “redule stress on the officials by allowing each official to work fewer games, would reduce travel, would allow more intensive training, inegrate younger officals more effectiviely, increase diversity, and improve quality of officiating.” This would affect the union drastically. There are only 119 NFL officials that officiate the entire season. These officials are also employed part time. The addition of three more crews would limit the amount of games the veterans call, and they could endure pay cuts to free up money for the new additions.

Salary and benefits are also on the table. The part time officials all have full time positions elsewhere that provide health insurance, pension, time off with pay, and other benefits. The NFLRA said they would be open to the idea of becoming full time officials if they would be fairly compensated. The refs are worried that the NFL will not be able to fully cover all of their benefits, since the NFL has never made any compensation proposals. Here is where it turns into a he said, she said. The league has publicly claimed that a 5 to 11 percent increase in salary has been made for the veteran officials. The officials are claiming this is a false statement. Officials said that this proposal actually includes, “aggregate game fees for all officials to be paid per a schedule to be developed by the NFLRA.” The league says  that if this salary pool gets passed, the salary increase may be an option for some employees. Being that the NFLRA is a union, there is no way it will pass since the union represents the entire veteran referee staff.
The game itself could also be in jeporady. Some players have raised concerns about their safety with the newbie officials in charge. Some players say that the newer referees need a lot of experience making calls at the speed of an NFL game. On the other hand, some players could intimidate the new refs, taking advantage of their inexperience. With wrong calls being made, fans could quickly turn on Goodell. Take for example the Dallas/San Diego game. Cowboys linebacker Donald Butler came up with an interception after a hard (and illegal) helmet-to-helmet hit from Chargers safety Eric Weddle. The officials called the foul on the Chargers, and gave them the ball. The right call would have been revoking the interception and giving the ball to the Cowboys. The Cowboys lost the game, and this blown call may have been the game changer. Although it was a preseason game, it is still a loss. Blown calls like this cannot happen during the regular season. It will ruin the game, and not mention some fantasy teams. An official must have at least five years of experience to call a Super Bowl game. Does the league really want to put the fate of the most important game of the year in the hands of rookie refs? At the end of the day the best teacher is experience. Consistency is needed and should be expected. The season is far too short for games to be loss due to miscalls.

3. NEW BOYS ON THE BLOCK- Thus far these players have proven they are worthy of a second look. Get familiar with their names and keep an eye on them when the season kicks off.

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson- The Seahawks signed former Green Bay back up quarterback Matt Flynn, but that hasn’t seem to put Wilson out of the running for starting quarterback. In his debut, Wilson completed 67% of his passes for 279 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Quite impressive, not to mention, he is leading all rookies (not just QBs) with 92 rushing yards. The rookie is set to display his talents again this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson- Since the NFL draft Richardson has been causing a buzz, hoping to be the young messiah that can lead the Browns to victory. Yes there is a snag in the armor of Richardson. He underwent surgery on August 9th, which the Browns called “routine” given that he is recovering from knee surgery. The Browns have just announced that he will play in the season opener. As long as health permitting,  he has the power, speed, and moves to dominate his position.

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon- Justin Blackmon may be the target Blaine Gabbert needs to find his way. Blackmon’s ease on the field and his ability to make plays is making him look like a veteran. In one preseason game, Blackmon has four catches for 72 yards in the first half. The rest of his Jaguars teammates have a combined 11 receiving yards. You be the judge.

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck- Ah yes, how can I not include the number one overall draft pick. From his preseason debut we saw a player make mistakes. A lot of them. That doesn’t mean you should cut out Luck just yet. He knows where his mistakes are and how to fix them. Having vet  wide receiver Reggie Wayne will help the new kid immensely.

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III- RG3 possess big-play potential. He has a strong arm and great speed that will be able to keep plays alive for the Redskins. The learning curve that RG3 will face is determining when he should make risky plays and when he should fine one of his many targets. It won’t always be pretty, but this rookie QB will have a successful season. Just don’t expect him to have Cam Newton rookie numbers… I’m still trying to figure out how he did that.

New York Giants RB David Wilson- The Giants had to fill the void Brandon Jacobs left. Enter in David Wilson. So far, it looks like Wilson is giving Ahmad Bradshaw some friendly competition. Wilson will be a great addition simply because as good as Bradshaw is, the likelihood of him being healthy for an entire season is debatable. Wilson is currently leading the team with 15 carries for 69 yards to go with two kickoff returns for 76 yards though preseason.
