Chargers Preseason Opener Will Feature First Female Referee

Several people are unaware that there is still a lockout going on, and although it is drastically different from last year’s player’s lockout, it will still affect the game. The ongoing labor dispute between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association has not come to an agreement and at this point, the NFL is planning on moving forward with replacement officials.

On Thursday night, the San Diego Chargers will host the Green Bay Packers in their preseason opener. History will be made when Shannon Eastin will be part of the replacement crew as the first female to officiate an NFL game. Eastin has previously worked as a referee in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and has 16 years of experience.

While I already planned on watching the Chargers kick off their season, the opportunity for Eastin to officiate at the NFL level will make for an exciting night of football. ESPN will broadcast the game, Thursday at 5:00 PDT. You go Shannon!

Kayla is a San Diego native, supporting the Chargers, Padres and Aztecs day in and day out. Her passion for football began at an early age, as she was raised by a die-hard Chargers family. Having been a cheerleader for more than 10+ years and a season ticket holder for 5+ years, she has learned to love the game from both the field level and the stands. A few of Kayla’s favorite sports memories include winning three NCA collegiate cheerleading titles, cheering at the 2011 NCAA tournament Sweet 16 game for SDSU and watching the 2008-2009 AFC Wild Card game at Qualcomm Stadium, where Bolts beat the Colts in overtime.
