Last week was an exciting and long awaited week for Indianapolis Colts fans.  The Colts organization finalized deals with three key rookies that were drafted by the team.  Former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, former Stanford tight end Coby Fleener and former Clemson tight end Dwayne Allen all signed on to join the Colts for their rookie season in the NFL.  While the Colts signing Luck is a huge gain to the team after losing 11 time Pro Bowler Peyton Manning to the Denver Broncos, officially signing Fleener and Allen will greatly benefit the Colts as well.

After their 2-14 season in 2011-2012, the Colts organization decided to clean house in order to rebuild the team.  For Colts fans, it was a scary thing to see.  Day after day, more and more key members to the team were being let go.  Team president Bill Polian, Coach Jim Caldwell and key players running back Joseph Addai, linebacker Gary Brackett and tight end Dallas Clark were all let go by the organization.  Shortly after, Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano were hired as general manager and head coach, respectively.  Many fans of the team were worried about what the team would look like after losing so many important members of the team.

One fortunate element that comes along with having the worst record in the NFL is getting the first pick in the NFL draft.  After releasing Peyton Manning, there was a lot of speculation as to whether or not the Colts would attempt to draft Stanford standout, quarterback Andrew Luck.  After replacing the important role of quarterback, the Colts then went after Luck’s teammate at Stanford, Coby Fleener.  The Colts needed someone to fill Dallas Clark’s outstanding role as tight end.  Fleener was the Colts pick for the second round of the draft.  The Colts decided not to draft a fullback, therefore drafting tight end Dwayne Allen in the third round.  Because of this, Fleener and Allen will have to be flexible and play both roles for the offense.

Both Fleener and Allen officially signed contracts with the Colts organization on Wednesday, July 25.  Fleener signed a four-year contract with the team.  There are no reports as to how long of a contract Allen signed. Fleener and Allen are among 27 total rookies the Colts have picked up for the season so far.
