Cookies are the one thing you can never go wrong with in the goodie bag. They are one of the first things to get snatched up from the table. If you mention the best chocolate chip cookie you’ve ever had, chances are someone in the room will pipe up with their best memory and relive that exact day at the mere thought of it. You have yours don’t you?
In 2001 I had THE best chocolate chip cookie of my life – it was thick and dense – soft and chewy. It was perfect. No matter how hard I begged though, owner of this recipe would not give up the secret to these little delights. I’m simply tickled to report that I have found the recipe through much research, trial and error. As you dive into public practices, draft planning, and figuring out which home games you’ll be able to attend – consider these for the first string on your team.
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract (optionally add vanilla bean paste)
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 package instant vanilla pudding
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons hot water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts
Cream together the butter and sugar until smooth.
Add eggs one at time continuing to beat the mix
Add vanilla extract continuing to mix.
Add salt to hot water – combine into mixture
In another bowl combine pudding, flour and baking soda – add slowly until dough is formed.
Add chocolate chips and optional nuts.
Spoon onto baking sheets using a cookie scoop or spoon for consistency
Bake at 350° for 10-13 minutes

Thank you Spencer! It took many years to figure out a good cookie. I hope these bring you joy!
Neil, great short cut! You can use cheesecake pudding for a little bit of a sour bite too!
Great picture! I love a good cookie and your ones look amazing!
Sounds delicious. I am definitely trying this one. I love making chocolate chip cookies and felt like I had nailed a good recipe. I had never thought of using pudding mix. I like to use self-rising flour so I can omit the baking soda and salt. My preference is to hold the nuts (that’s what he said).
