49ers vs. the G-Men: Revenge is a dish best served cold

To say that this is just another ordinary game for the 49ers, is like saying that it’s an ordinary day when the space shuttle travels through the streets of Los Angeles. How often do have a rematch game with the team who barely kept you from going to the Superbowl, and in addition, said team also just happened to win it?

Of course Coach Harbaugh has emphasized that this is “all new business” to the 49ers, as opposed any revenge or retribution, but with nearly the whole team returning from last year, one can assume that it at least occupies a small amount of their thoughts this week. One player who has admitted this is Kyle Williams. After a few costly mistakes that even Williams admits changed the outcome of last season’s NFC Championship game, he has said he wants to get even with the Giants. He, however, is questionable to participate due to a foot injury.

To add even more drama to an already built up game, New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride made comments to the New York media about MVP defensive end Justin Smith on Friday, stating that he “gets away with murder” in regards to defensive holding. Harbaugh found it egregious enough to release a statement defending his player. So with bulletin board fodder for both locker rooms, it will be interesting to see what this Sunday’s game will bring.

Even if this is just another game for the 49ers, it definitely is not to a majority of the 49er Faithful, myself included. Anxious anticipation has been the mood of the week. Sunday at 1:25 PST can’t get here quick enough.

I have loved football for as long as I can remember. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, so I have a little soft spot for the Seahawks but I am genetically one of the 49er faithful. My family is from the bay area, so being a Niner is a requirement, not an option.

I relocated to Southern California to attend USC on an academic scholarship. During all four years at Southern Cal, I was a coxswain on the women’s varsity rowing team, working out in the same facility as all of the other athletes, including the football team. Knowing the players behind the face masks made all of the games very personal for me and increased my passion for the game. I continue to follow USC players in the league and unless they are playing against the Niners, I will pull for them.

I have been attending 49er games for quite some time. My grandfather has had season tickets for the Niners since they played at Kezar. At 95, he still attends a few games a year and knows everyone in our section.
