By now you’ve heard the story. On October 18th, in Spokane, Washington, Central Valley High Schooler Austin Rehkow kicked a record breaking 67-yard field goal.  This kick not only broke the Washington State record, it tied the second best kick in national high school sports history.  Even more impressive may be the fact that the NFL record is only 63 yards.  With so much media attention,  we have all been wondering what life has been like for this 17 year-old high school senior.  Austin was gracious enough to talk to hergamelife writer Jenny Goos about life afer this amazing kick.

HGL:  How has your life changed since the field goal?

Austin:  “I’ve definitely received more attention as far as being out and about in the community along with people asking for autographs and pictures. I have had contact with Good Morning America, ESPN, local news stations, Athlon (Sports) Magazine, and many radio stations around the country. Also I have been contacted by Washington State University, Brigham Young University, University of Idaho and a few more colleges below the the Division 1 level.”

HGL:  What has the reaction been like at school?

Austin:  “The reaction has been great! Teachers have nothing but good things to say and the students have been awesome. The hype has died down a little but people still acknowledge the fact that I did something pretty amazing and have respect for me. For the most part I am pretty well acquainted with the student body but for those people who I do not know even they will come up and congratulate me on the kick.”

HGL:  How far can you kick without a block?

Austin: “The farthest I have hit without a block is 50 yards. I have not attempted anything farther without a block because with the long grass and the ability to use a block at the high school level I don’t work without it during season so that I don’t have to adjust back. So 50 is the longest but haven’t attempted anything past that.”

HGL:  Do you aspire to play in the NFL?  If so, for which team?

Austin:  “I would love to play in the NFL and it would be a dream come true. I know that the chances of breaking into the league someday are quite slim but I love a challenge and would love to have the opportunity to be in such a league. If there was any team –  I would love to play for the Seahawks (close to home) or the 49ers. Hard to really pick a team when in reality being apart of any one of the teams would be quite an honor.”

HGL:  And the most important question….what kind of shoes do you wear?

Austin:  “Well in games I wear Nike CTR360′s. And just to wear around - Nike Free’s.” (I don’t know about you, but this screams Nike endorsement deal).
