Lately, Coach Jim Harbaugh has been mixing things up by throwing wildcat QB Colin Kaepernick in the mix. Alex Smith is still looking strong, but there are definitely some pros and cons to a head coach managing two quarterbacks. Here is a run down of some important things to note when two quarterbacks share the spotlight.

Pro- Keeps the Defense off Balance: Remember when Colin Kaepernick stepped onto the field against the New York Jets in week 4? He completely threw their defense for a loop and showed what a unique skill set he possessed. Kaepernick faked a handoff to Kendall Hunter and ran in tandem with Delanie Walker trailing behind, but kept the ball himself and waltzed down the field for a large gain.
Con- QB Leadership Issues: Alex Smith came off an electric season last year and continued his momentum into this year. When Kaepernick made his debut, it was impressive. Fans began wondering who this fast-moving, versatile quarterback was. Would he take the place of Alex Smith anytime soon? Harbaugh is smart and has been doing an excellent job using Kaepernick here and there, while still allowing Smith to spearhead his team’s offense. The New York Jets, on the other hand, are an example of why this issue can become a conflict. Sanchez and Tebow, anyone?
Pro- Opens up the Offense: For a team who has struggled with offense for some time, allowing both Smith and Kaepernick to run plays, has really turned things around. Smith has been frequently looking deep for weapons like Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss, while Kaepernick oftentimes likes to run with the ball.
Con- Can Disrupt Momentum: When a defense or offense has been so used to running certain plays with the same teammates, routines tend to form. When someone or something new steps in, things can be thrown off balance. So far, the 49ers have done a great job keeping up the momentum even when things may not be going their way.
Stay tuned…the 49ers face the Arizona Cardinals Monday night for a fierce division rivalry!
