Colin Kaepernick’s Time to Shine?

By: John Martinez Pavliga

Sunday was a day full of surprises in the NFL, but I have to say that the highlight was the 49ers and the Rams ending in a tie. It was mind boggling, it was confusing, and it was a nail biter to watch. So much had happened by the end of the game that even the players couldn’t recall details. There hasn’t been a tie game in the NFL since 2008, and the 49ers haven’t ended a game with a tie since 1986! While many people are upset and conflicted by the tie, I don’t necessarily see it as a bad thing…

The 49ers lost Alex Smith when they were down by 2 touchdowns, and back-up QB Colin Kaepernick came in and carried the team to overtime. This definitely says something about a rusty team coming off a bye week and struggling in the first quarter. It is still uncertain if Alex Smith will have a chance to play next Monday night against the Bears, but don’t forget that Jay Cutler also left Sunday’s game with a concussion; he and Alex are in the same boat. Next Monday’s game could come down to a face-off between Jason Campbell and Colin Kaepernick, and if it does, I’ll take my chances with Kaepernick. The guy is 6’6”, has great feet, a canon for an arm, and he can run. He is raw and needs more time to polish his skills, but this could be his time to step up and carry the 49ers forward if Smith cannot.

Yesterday was proof that on “any given Sunday” in the NFL, any team can beat another team.

  1. Taylor Benson nailed it. Good and insightful look how the 9rz, rusty after a bye week and sputtering from the opening kickoff managed to come away with a tie after losing their starting QG and down by 14 points.
