It’s official – Justin Morneau has been traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. It is not that hard to believe given the fact that Morneau is a month away from being a free agent and he put on a good show with strong hitting since being put on waivers three weeks ago. Number 33 hit nine home runs in August and showed glimpses of his 2006 MVP year.
What I personally won’t miss are all of the strikeouts on low and away pitches that Morneau rarely could lay off. Perhaps the Pirates hitting staff can assist with that.
Justin won’t walk into a locker room full of strangers. Wearing his new number 36 he joins ex-Twin Francisco Liriano who is lighting up the NL with a 15-6 record this season.
What did the Twins get from the Pirates in return? Outfielder Alex Pressley (do we need another outfielder?) and a player to be named later or cash.
Morneau could return to the Twins if they decide to go after him in the free agent market next year. He was and will continue to be a beloved Twin and we probably will be welcoming him into the Twins Hall of Fame when he retires.
