The Seahawks made a big statement on the field Sunday with a 29-3 victory over the 49ers, but outspoken cornerback Richard Sherman had his own post game statements to make. Sherman felt those who picked San Francisco to win Sunday’s game disrespected the Seahawks and he wanted everyone to know about it. He got his chance in a post game interview where he told Michelle Tafoya ” There are a lot of pundits and ignorant idiots who thought, ‘ Oh the Seahawks are gonna lose this game’. Well, please, please don’t doubt us again. Every time they doubt us, you look stupid”. While stifling coverage of top wide receivers is one of Sherman’s strong suits, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that humility is not. He went on to say that the Seahawks are “on another level” and accused 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh of ignoring him after the game. All of this cocky bravado made Richard Sherman a hot topic of NFL discussions this week. Just the way he likes it.
Love him or hate him, you can’t argue his talent. Sherman is a leader on perhaps the best defense in the NFL. He showed up for last week’s division battle in a big way, shutting down Anquan Boldin and recording 2 tackles and an interception. His performance earned him NBC’s Sunday Night Football Player of the Game ball, as well as NFC defensive player of the week honors. Maybe Sherman and his defense are gaining that respect he demanded from the “pundits” and “ignorant idiots”, or maybe Sherman is getting ahead of himself too early in the season. The Seahawks still have to prove that they can get over the road struggles they had last year, and one of those road games will be in San Francisco. Either way, the Seahawks defense is looking like a unit no one wants to face, and we all want to hear what Richard Sherman will next.
