An update for my Steeler Nation, UGA and Chicago Bears Fans on punter Drew Butler. In case you don’t follow either team or college ball, here’s a little background: he played for Coach Richt and was a Star Punter at UGA from 2008 to 2011. On April 28, 2012, he was one of 12 undrafted free agent rookies signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He beat out Jeremy Kapinos to make the team, averaging 43.8 yards that year. I received a Credential from the Steelers and traveled to the ‘Burgh to cover the game against the Bengals on 12/24/12. After the loss (Drew had a very respectable game), the locker room was quiet, because a win would’ve put the Steelers into the playoffs. Around the first of September 2013, Drew was cut by the Steelers.
The following week, on *September 9th, I met his Dad, Kevin Butler while covering the Terance Mathis Celebrity Golf Classic to benefit the Emory ALS Center. Kevin was also a punter at UGA, playing for Vince Dooley; who watched Butler kick the winning FG for Redan in the State Championship game, Redan High vs Marist High. After spending four years as the Bulldogs’ kicker, he was drafted in the 4th Round by the Chicago Bears and played in Chicago for ten years.
Now that Drew is heading to the Windy City…it almost feels right that it worked out this way…because I remember *telling Kevin that the Steelers will miss Drew (I believe they did) and I hoped that he would land in a good place…He has.
